What Is Consciousness? Where Science and Spirituality Meet—and Disagree

What is consciousness? Explore leading scientific models, the hard problem, contemplative traditions, and the important places where science and spirituality still disagree.

Consciousness: scientific models, spiritual perspectives, and open questions.

The Hard Problem That Changes Everything

In 1994, philosopher David Chalmers articulated what he called "the hard problem of consciousness" — and it remains the single most important unsolved problem in science. The hard problem is this: why is any of it accompanied by subjective experience at all?

Three Models of Consciousness

The materialist model — dominant in mainstream science — holds that consciousness is produced by the brain. It is an emergent property of sufficiently complex information processing.

The dualist model — historically associated with Descartes — holds that mind and matter are fundamentally different substances that somehow interact.

The idealist or panpsychist model — holds that consciousness is fundamental, not emergent. Rather than the brain producing consciousness, consciousness is the substrate within which the brain, and everything else, arises.

What Near-Death Experience Research Tells Us

The most empirically challenging data for the materialist model comes from near-death experience (NDE) research. NDEs include elements that should be impossible if consciousness is simply a product of brain activity: verified perceptions of events that occurred during the period of cardiac arrest.

Quantum Physics and Consciousness

The intersection of quantum physics and consciousness is a contested area. The measurement problem in quantum mechanics raises genuine questions about the role of observation and consciousness in physical reality.

Where Wisdom Traditions Have Always Stood

The proposition that consciousness is fundamental — not produced by matter, but the ground from which matter and all experience arise — is the foundational insight of Advaita Vedanta, the non-dual teachings of Kashmir Shaivism, the Dzogchen teachings of Tibetan Buddhism, and the mystical core of every major wisdom tradition.
